The Five Aspects of Holistic Health

Kausthub Desikachar is a well-known yoga teacher, healer, and spiritual adviser. The founder of both KHYF International and Viniyoga Pte. Ltd., he also serves as CEO of the Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation. Kausthub Desikachar maintains an interest in yoga as a complement to holistic healing and often employs holistic health principles in his work. Here is a brief explanation of the five aspects of holistic health:

Physical
When people think of health, they most often think of physical health. Part of this is because physical signs and symptoms of illnesses are more easily tracked. Sleep, exercise, and diet are all components of physical health.

Social
Human beings are social creatures. As such, social interactions play a big role in a person’s emotional state. Holistic health promotes social networking and volunteering to foster healthy social connections, while advocating for the release of toxic contacts.

Emotional
There is a strong link between prolonged emotional challenges and physical illnesses, yet emotional health is often overlooked. Through holistic health, seeking therapy when needed is encouraged, as is practicing mindfulness and lowering stress.

Spiritual
Being spiritually healthy does not mean being religious. Rather, it focuses on how a person’s inner soul connects with the world around them. Spending time in nature or meditating every day are two methods of boosting spiritual health.

Mental Memory, decision-making, and learning new things are all tied up in a person’s mental or cognitive health. People must function at the peak of their cognitive abilities if they want to be healthy in other aspects of their lives.
